Minnesota Schools of Character Award Program

Waseca High School Named 2012 Minnesota School of Character
Congratulations to Waseca High School who was recently named a 2012 Minnesota School of Character. Waseca High School has demonstrated, through a rigorous application process that they have improved academic achievement, student behavior and school climate because of its focus on character. Each year, Synergy recognizes schools for their outstanding character development of students through its sponsorship of the prestigious State and National Schools of Character program administered by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) in Washington, DC. Synergy honored the 2012 Minnesota Schools of Character in a ceremony at the State Capitol on May 17. View the entire press release and ceremony recap and photos.

Start preparing for the 2013 SSOC/NSOC awards application process now. The online application process will open  in May/June with a December 1, 2012 deadline. Please watch the website for details. In preparation of the application process, please consider the following requirements for  the application:

  • Basic information about their school or district
  • Narrative and portfolio evidence of how they are implementing each of the 11 Principles
  • Average scores from their stakeholder group’s 11 Principles self-assessment
For more information about the 11 Principles and conducting a self-assessment with stakeholders, please refer to the full 11 Principles of Effective Character Education.

Important tip for applicants:
Applicants are encouraged to compose and save their narrative responses using a word processing program and then “cut and paste” from their saved documents directly into the online application. This strategy can save hours of distress should an unlikely technical error occur. Similarly, applicants are encouraged to create separate “portfolio” documents for each of the 11 Principles before completing the application online so that they can easily upload them.
