2013 Minnesota Promising Practices Award Program

Avalon School – St. Paul
ReadBrave: A school-wide book club*
Avalon high school students teamed with St. Paul Public Libraries and the author A.S. King to read and discuss Everybody Sees the Ants, her young adult novel that deals with issues of bullying and depression. Students recorded public service announcements about bullying and published them on social media sites, created art inspired by the book and participated in writing workshops.

Don't Count Crayons -- Value Yourself & Others*
This practice combines homeroom curriculum with a school assembly to promote the "Bluejay Way" expectations of respecting yourself, others, property and learning. Students reflected on a video, drew visuals of what they valued about themselves and created homeroom murals which were included as part of a video presentation at an assembly celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday.
